AKROTHINIA

The Akrothinia was a literary journal founded by the Jewish medical student Bernhard Hirschel in Dresden in 1833. He undertook the writing of this journal with his three friends Louis Lesser, Veit Meyer and Wolf Landau.

It is not clear whether this journal ever achieved published form. Only two issues of this journal have been discovered, both in handwritten form. They are dated 3 and 10 July 1833.

These two handwritten issues of the Akrothinia are in the Hayes Family Papers in Victoria, B.C. Digital images of the pages of these two issues are provided here in association with the publication of the diary of Louis Lesser:

Christopher R. Friedrichs (ed.), A Jewish Youth in Dresden: The Diary of Louis Lesser, 1833-1837(Studies and Texts in Jewish History and Culture, XXI) (Bethesda, MD: University Press of Maryland, 2011).

It is clear from the diary of Louis Lesser that further work on this project continued in the fall of 1833 and the spring of 1834, but no copies of later issues have survived.

Students and scholars are welcome to study and cite this material. However, the full text of the Akrothinia or any single article, poem or story may not be published without permission. Scholars who wish to quote more than brief excerpts must contact Prof. Christopher R. Friedrichs, University of British Columbia.

There are seven pages in the first issue and eight pages in the second issue. Images of all fifteen pages are provided here.
